The layouts

10 layouts that van conversions are actually built to, from short to long. Each is a preset configuration drawn by the same engine as the configurator, so what you see here is exactly what you get. Pick one and adjust it to your taste afterwards.

01 · Seating group

Bench bed only

Just the bed. The only layout that fits an L1.

A short van simply has no room for a fixed bed and a galley. This layout is honest about that and delivers what does fit: two benches along the side walls with a 700 mm aisle between them, and 380 litres of storage below. In the evening you pull a slatted frame out of each bench; together they fill that aisle and you sleep across the full width of the van. You cook outside on a portable burner, or add a Kitchen 643 later once you have a longer van. Everything stays below 900 mm, so no standing height is needed.

02 · Seating group

Seating group

Two benches along the walls that become one bed at night.

If your van is too short for a fixed bed, this is the layout that remains — and it is not a compromise, it is what most self-build packages deliver. Two benches sit along the side walls at the rear with the aisle between them: by day you face each other looking out through the rear doors, at night the two slatted frames slide toward each other into one surface. You sleep across the full width, so your sleeping length is your load width. The galley stands ahead of the benches against the wall. Everything stays below 900 mm, so no standing height is needed.

03 · Transverse bed

Transverse bed

The most frugal fixed bed: it costs only 1.40 m of length.

The bed lies across the van, so your sleeping length is your load width. That costs only 1.40 m of length, which is why this layout leaves so much over: an 860 mm galley, a tall cupboard and still an aisle of over 700 mm. Under the bed is a garage you load from the rear doors, at a height you set yourself between 700 and 1,150 mm. The hard condition: at least 1,800 mm of load width.

04 · Transverse bed

Transverse bed with seating

Transverse bed, a big galley and a bench to sit on.

Because the transverse bed costs so little length, a van of around 3.50 m also fits a full 1,060 mm galley plus a bench opposite the worktop. That is the layout that lets you stay inside on a rainy day without having to sit on the bed — and that is exactly what most self-builders regret not doing.

05 · Slide-out bed

Slide-out bed

A fixed bed with a garage that slides out to 2.05 m at night.

This is the layout for the van that is too short for a two-metre fixed bed and too narrow to lie across. The platform spans the full load width at the rear and costs only 1,600 mm by day; in the evening you pull the base forward and have 2,050 mm of sleeping length along the van. Below it sits a full-width garage whose height you set yourself. Ahead of it: an 860 mm galley and a tall cupboard.

06 · Slide-out bed

Slide-out bed with seating

The same bed, with a full galley and a bench to sit on.

If you have more length, it goes to the galley and to a place to sit. The 1,060 mm galley has a sink, a hob, worktop beside it and a bay for a compressor fridge; opposite it a bench runs along the wall. At the rear the slide-out bed with the garage below. This is the layout you can travel for weeks with.

07 · Lengthwise bed

Lengthwise bed

A fixed full-width bed with the largest garage.

The bed stays put. A fixed 2,050 mm platform across the full load width, so you sleep stretched out along the van and never have to slide or make up anything. Below it the largest garage we draw: on the highest setting a bicycle rolls in upright, loaded from the rear doors. Ahead of it a 1,060 mm galley and two tall cupboards. This bed costs 2.05 m of your length and therefore only fits a long van — the configurator says exactly from which size.

08 · Lengthwise bed

Lengthwise bed with seating for four

Everything: fixed bed, garage, full galley and seating for four.

The extra length of an L4 van goes to real seating here: two benches facing each other across the van. Four people can sit and eat, and with the cushions laid flat a child sleeps there. At the rear the fixed lengthwise bed with the garage below, in the middle the full 1,260 mm galley and two tall cupboards. To sleep four adults you need a pop-top roof — and we do not supply those.

09 · Slide-out bed

Slide-out bed with two seats

At night the bed slides out over the two seats.

A seating group of two benches costs 1,266 mm of load length you do not use at night. Two separate 643 mm seats cost the same length, but here the extended bed rests on them: the platform slides 450 mm forward and lands on the seats, giving you 2,050 mm of sleeping length without a leg in the aisle. By day you sit facing each other. The galley sits ahead, opposite a tall cupboard.

10 · Transverse bed

Transverse bed with a seat

A fixed bed, a full galley and still somewhere to sit.

The transverse bed costs only 1,400 mm of your length, which is exactly why there is room for more than a galley alone. Opposite the worktop stands a single 643 mm seat: enough to eat or put your shoes on, without the 1,266 mm a bench costs. A narrow cupboard sits ahead. The garage under the bed loads from the rear doors.
